Top 10 things to do on a rainy day in Tirol

Austria is beautiful at any time of year. The country is covered in jaw-dropping mountains, crystal-clear lakes and verdant forests.

We love it irrespective of the weather, but sometimes our guests are a little stumped about what to do on a rainy day whilst on holiday in the area. So, we thought we'd give a little helping hand and recommend our top 10 things to do on a rainy day in Tirol.

1) Explore the pretty town of Kitzbühel:

Kitzbühel is a picturesque Alpine town about 25 minutes from Hütte Waldzeit. The pretty medieval centre is lined with upscale shops and cafes, so why not spend a rainy day hopping in and out of boutique shops and artisan coffee houses? You could also pop into Museum Kitzbühel, which chronicles the town's history and the area’s winter sports and has a collection of paintings by local artist Alfons Walde.

2) Admire a local waterfall:

Wasserfal Spertental is an awesome waterfall near Kirchberg, about a 30-minute drive from Hütte Waldzeit. You can park close to the waterfall at 'Parktplatz Ebenau', and then walk up to the waterfall from there. The walk only takes 10 minutes, so you're minimising time in the rain. It's a pretty walk irrespective of the weather, that follows a beautiful river to the waterfall. There is also a suspended bridge hanging over the waterfall which has great views of the waterfall.

3) Visit Tratzberg Castle:

Tratzberg Castle is a popular destination on a rainy day in Tirol, a 16th-century Tirolean castle near the village of Jenbach. The castle is decked out with countless antiques of a previous era. Either meander around the castle at your own pace or fully immerse yourself in its history with an audio guide. Tratzberg Castle is an excursion that you and the whole family will enjoy.

4) Layer up and head on a rainy day hike:

We love hiking in the rain. There's something so serene about it. Our rainy day tip number 4 is to layer up in warm waterproof clothes, and embrace the rain on a rainy hike! There are loads of options in the area too. Make sure to pick your hike wisely - ideally don't head to exposed areas, and stay off ridge walks or any trails that involve scrambling. Your best bet is to head into the forest under the shelter of the trees. We'd recommend the Hopfgarten im Brixental scenic loop for this, as it's a pretty circular walk predominantly under a canopy of trees. Check out some of the other hikes you could do here.

5) Visit the picturesque Rattenberg:

Standing on the banks of the Inn River, the town of Rattenberg is tucked between a fortress on the hill and the river. Its medieval centre is full of pretty townhouses, cobbled streets and alleyways. Historically, the development of the glass industry brought Rattenberg to the height of its prosperity, so why don't you visit the glass-blowing workshop at Kisslinger House for some rainy-day fun? Make sure to pop into the Augustine Museum, filled with Tirolean artefacts, and see the amazing 12th-century Nagelschmied Homes. The pedestrian high street offers good shopping, and plenty of eateries to take a break and watch the world go by.

6) Explore the city of Innsbruck:

Innsbruck is the capital of Tirol, Austria's western state. The city has loads of culture, cafes & restaurants, and plenty of shopping. It's worth making a day trip here any time of year and it's especially a great excursion for a rainy day in Tirol. Visit the Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art in Innsbruck which contains a large collection of cultural artefacts from Tirol. Make sure to visit the Court Church too, which is home to the biggest Imperial Cenotaph in Europe! If you have time, you could also head into the nearby Ferdinandeum Museum (Tirolean State Museum), which contains an abundance of information about Tirolean history and art.

Heading to the Aqua Dome water park complex is an incredible experience any time of year, and is so magical on a rainy day. The thermal spa is a stunning recreation complex in Längenfeld in the Ötztal Valley, with a trio of flying saucer–shaped outdoor pools with panoramic mountain views. Yes please!

8) Make an outing to Hall in Tirol:

The beautiful medieval town of Hall in Tirol is another great destination for a rainy day in Tirol. The pretty town is scattered with pastel-coloured townhouses and magical winding lanes. Dip into the parish church or the Mint Tower and museum. You'll be sure to fill your rainy day with entertaining activities in this cute little town!

9) Jump around at the Trampoline Park in Walchsee:

This 2,000m² indoor play area is a fun spot to entertain adults and children alike! The Trampoline Park is filled to the brim with indoor trampolines, play areas and an indoor karting track. The bistro also offers tasty treats for when you've worked up an appetite after jumping around so much!

10) Step back in time and explore a Silver Mine:

Schwaz in Tirol is home to one of the most productive silver mines in history, the Silberberg Schwaz, having employed 7,400 people about 500 years ago. Board a mini train and travel into the depths of the mine to get a feel for what it was like for the miners all of those years ago.

We hope this helps you plan your rainy-day activities in Tirol! If you need any more local tips or are still looking for a place to stay, get in contact and we can let you know if there is any availability at Hütte Waldzeit!
